What is Matcha?

Matcha literally means “powdered tea” and it is a concentrated form of green tea through which the whole leaves are ingested. Because matcha is made from high-quality tea, and the whole leaves are ingested. It is a more potent source of nutrients than steeped green tea. Nutritionists all over the world have written extensively on the varied health benefits of Matcha. The consensus among nutritionists like Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten is that there are very few people who would not benefit from a regular intake of Matcha.

What makes Matcha so special?

It’s all down to the fact that green tea and especially Matcha, is one of a newly discovered group of wonder foods called Sirtfoods. These foods contain especially high nutrients that switch on a master group of wellbeing genes that exist in all of us.

Why is Matcha so good for you?

Matcha tea contains a unique and potent class of antioxidant known as catechins. They are not found in other foods. In particular, the catechin EGCg (epigallocatechin gallate) provides potent healthful properties. Matcha has been shown to provide a range of benefits! From aiding in the burning of fat, to having strong therapeutic benefits for those undergoing medical treatments.

Where is Matcha from?

Although many are only discovering Matcha, it is nothing new! Matcha has been drunk in Japan since the 12th century, and even before that in China! Our Matcha is grown in the Uji region of Japan by an experienced Tea Master who has spent years learning and perfecting the art of judging, grading and cultivating the tea.

Matcha comes from the tea plant, Camellia Sinesis, a subtropical evergreen. That one plant can produce the range of flavours and tastes that it does is amazing enough, but that it can produce a beverage as beneficial as matcha tea is even more so. Our ceremonial grade Matcha is stone ground by an experienced group in a farm that has cultivated this wonderful tea for over 800 years.

What makes Matcha different?

Both matcha and green tea are derived from the same plant called Camellia Sinensis. While green tea leaves usually come in the form of a tea bag, matcha is in powder form. Matcha is actually 100% green tea leaves that have been ground into a fine powder. It is much more concentrated than regular green tea, so you only need ½ to 1 teaspoon per cup. In comparison to regular green tea, when drinking matcha, you consume the whole tea leaf!

Why Ceremonial Grade?

Simply put, ceremonial grade matcha tastes better and contains a higher concentration of many of matchas beneficial compounds! If you have ever tasted good matcha, you will have noticed the sweet, vegetal smell to it.  This comes from the amino acid called L-Theanine, again produced by the shade growing process. It is the L-Theanine which gives matcha that nice, clean-drinking, green tea taste. It has a strongly bitter and astringent flavour that isn’t tasty or sweet.
